My #bloggerfail We Can All Learn From

h&m jeansThis post was originally titled something else, something about fashion but as I started typing and the emotions started flowing I realized it deserved more credit than I was giving it. So here we are.

I want to start off by saying there are so many amazing things about NYC but one of my favorites is the fact you’re never lacking style inspiration, like, ever, especially in SOHO. I’ve literally never seen so much good fashion! And of course being immersed in the blogging world helps, too.

So the other day I was shooting with my girlfriend on a Leica Q (hands down the best camera I’ve ever used) and she shows up in this gorgeous striped Madewell button down but it wasn’t styled in your average, tucked in kinda’ way. She actually tied one side in a small knot and let the other side hang out… weird, right?! (See the shot HERE.)

It was actually really cool, so cool that I decided to copy her for this shoot. Nevertheless, my look wasn’t nearly as fabulous as hers but I was excited to put a new spin on a basic white button down. I mean it’s NYC so if you’re going to try something new, this is the place to do it!

this is where I get emotional…

I always like to share with you guys real behind the scenes action so first of all, during the shoot it was raining, hard, and I was wearing white. But the show must go on, hence the reason I’m huddled in a doorway for half the pics. This was also my first time shooting with this photographer and she was sweet enough to meet me on my schedule so we made it work the best we could.

And as most of you know I shoot on my lunch break during my day job, so with the rain and knowing I was pressed for time, I was feeling a bit rushed. So when I realized my bag was hiding my newly discovered way to wear a white button down, it was too late and we were too wet to start over. Needless to say, this shoot was a pretty big #bloggerfail on my part but at least I have a story to tell, right?

Things didn’t turn out as picturesque as I’d like them to be but it was real. And if there’s one thing I want you to take away from this little mishap it’s to make the most of what you have. Do the best you can right now and make adjustments later. You’re going to have #bloggerfails but that’s part of the process.

A lot of bloggers become paralyzed by trying to get things perfect on the first try, so they give up after day 1 not realizing that day 2 will be better. If there’s one thing I can promise you it’s that your blog layout will undergo hundreds of changes, your editing style will take months to learn, and discovering your niche won’t happen overnight. But all of those things will happen as long as you’re willing to stick it out and embrace each #bloggerfail along the way.

I say this all the time: no blogger is amazing at everything. Some bloggers are good at a lot and really good at one or two things, and the rest of the stuff is fine tuned over time or they hire people to help them with the things they’re not so good at. Ask any blogger and they’ll tell you the same thing.

If you want to elevate a certain area of your blog or life, you’re going to have some hiccups along the way but the important thing to remember is that you’re doing it, and typically the more you do something the better and better you become.

So for me personally, now I know to check the details… and also the weather.

What’s one of your #bloggerfails? Tell me in the comments below!

xx

Firstly, I think the pics are fab, as are you. My biggest blogger fail is not changing my password after my developer made my website (i trust too easily) and then he wiped out my entire blog, months worth of posts and asked for more money to re-do it. #fail

I am now working on re-launching. Lesson learned.

Aw thank you Priyanka! You’re so sweet. No way! That actually happened?! Did you have a contract?! I would 100% report him to the better business bureau! I’m so sorry that happened. Ugh. xx

My blogger fail is starting another blog when I wasn’t finished fine pointing my original blog. Finding the time to work two blogs are hectic at times and I think that I would have had a better result with my original blog if I had put all my energy into that one blog and advertised accordingly. I jumped out there too soon.

Yes Sasha – hectic is an understatement! I think once you’ve totally mastered one blog, the second will be easier to manage. So are you still trying to build both or have you cut back to one? xx

I love this piece, Brittany! I definitely experience some form of #BloggerFail whenever I shoot (like not realizing my lipstick has completely worn off or that I have absolutely nowhere to change…) but I try to make a note of it and plan better for the next time. One of my favorite quotes is “Go out on a limb; that’s where the fruit is” and it 100% applies to trying new things; it’s the only way to learn what works best for you!

Brittany, this was a great post! I actually had no idea you were also working full-time too. I TOTALLY get it – time to shoot is literally a luxury, so I can relate to this SO much. In fact, in my most recent post, I had such an annoying #bloggerfail – basically I was shooting a recipe… and the camera died mid shoot. I had the post geared up to go and promoted it online but the post must go on – I used the photos I had which weren’t a lot, did a not so great iphone photo in not ideal lighting (messing with the camera took valuable sunlight!) but was upfront about it in the post. Still unsure if that was the right move BUT in this world were it’s all perfect all the time, I figured it might be somewhat relatable, maybe even a breath of fresh air?! Anyways, thanks for sharing your story! I also love the part NY plays with it. I always get SO much value from your posts, all the damn time. xx Shannon || http://www.champagneatshannons.com

I totally relate to this post and I totally agree with everything you said! I’m a big advocate of baby steps and not getting overwhelmed by the big picture. If I had waited until I had everything perfectly figured out, I would’ve never started. Just buying the damn URL name for my blog was the first step, and I’ve been slowly figuring things out since. Still really new. We’re all gonna have #bloggerfails so why not embrace them a little bit? Sometimes I think the best thing is to joke about your fails and not take yourself too seriously. Recently, I did a solo photo shoot with my tripod. I have the cannon app on my phone that lets me see what my camera sees and snap pics remotely. Afterwards I realized that in several of my pics (the best ones of course) you could clearly see the phone with my picture on it. Lol. Oops. Ended up posting an insta story about it making fun of my self.

Hi, Brittany. First of all, I just discovered your website, and I am happy I did. I think you look gorgeous and I love the look. I have to agree with you and the NYC style. I use to live there, and I still miss the beautiful shops and their many fashion choices. I recently came back from a short NYC trip and bought a lot of stuff for my little daughter;) I know a thing or two about #bloggerfail. When I look at some older pics, I sometimes cringe and immediately want to reshoot them. But just like Ariel, I try to make notes and see what I can do better next time. Well, sometimes I do reshoot them;) Have a happy rest of your week and thank you for sharing this story!!!!

Hi Mariska, welcome welcome! So happy you discovered me. You’re such a doll, thank you for your kind words! Taking mental notes is SO important and that’s exactly what separates an amateur from a pro so you’re on the right track. Please stay in touch, I’d love to hear from you again soon! xx

I wouldn’t even call that a fail, it just sounds like a less than perfect day to me (a.k.a normal) but I’m glad you acknowledged it for everyone who thinks some people’s lives are actually perfect!

This is seriously exactly what I needed to hear. I recently launched So Sydney NY because I was getting so many travel intinerary requests. I decided it was time to finally put all my experiences and passions into a platform. I’m struggling to gain exposure, solidify a style, and find brands to collaborate with. I think it just comes down to being impatient and wanting to excel quickly, but the reality is that everything takes time to build. Your words in this post uplifted me & I can’t wait to read more in the future. Thank you!
