Why I Changed Blog Names

ralph waldo emerson quotesIf you ask my mom she’ll say I’m impulsive and indecisive, but I like to consider myself a perfectionist who follows her gut. And my gut, after coconut milk ice cream, was telling me to change blog names.

So then I thought, ‘O.m.g. I need a new name right now!’.

Lucky for me, the amount of ideas I have for products, books, business ventures, workouts, etc. is endless so this would be no problem, right? WRONG. Thinking of a name for something as dear to you as a child!? Yeah, that’s some heavy stuff that I was not prepared to do.

As much as I loved Sheer Spirit, I just kind of evolved from it. Sheer Spirit represented a very spiritual time in my life, and Not Another Blonde represents that too, plus the not-so-spiritual stuff people tend to leave out.

I wanted to create a place that was raw – a real depiction of a young adult trying to find her way in the world with a stylish and inspirational twist. I wanted to combine my two passions: writing and fashion, so that’s why I decided to write about fashion, but I needed a blog name I could brand.

I actually lost sleep over it. Day in and day out the wheels would be turning on how I could get this thing off the ground. I’d even asked my co-workers for name suggestions, mind you they have noooooo idea about blogging whatsoever.

After about a month of stressing over this thing, I had it, well actually my co-worker Kevin had it, “Blonde Buddha with a Booty”…nailed it. Thanks Kev.

I’m joking, I would never. Well, I might. Here were the finalists after my month long name binge:

The Blonde Buddha – already taken and she’s NOT willing to sell, so you can stop right there

Styled by Brittany – ok, well what happens if I don’t post about style anymore…?

Blog of Brittany – cute, but no, reminds me of The Book of Eli

Born To Be Blonde – taken

Fashion Trashcan – super catchy, but it sounds like I’m thrifting, so no

Style Once in a While – well I actually want to be stylish ALL the time so this would be a no

Bits of Brittany – sounds like something related to Charles Manson…

Not Another Blonde – BINGO!

Now you’re probably thinking ‘Where did she come up with such a genius blog name anyway?!’. As I mentioned before, it took a lot of brain power, (something all blondes can relate to), and a LOT of persistence. Some people suggest the best way to think of a blog name is to just wait for inspiration, and I agree to some degree… but then again you gotta be proactive!

As I said before, my mom would say I’m impulsive and indecisive, ok fine. But even before my month long blog binge, I was thinking of changing my whole brand anyway. So this was something in the making for quite some time.

I looked to other blogs and their names for inspiration. Then I realized, in my life, every single person has said something about my blonde-ness, whether it’s because I actually live up to the stereotype or I do the opposite and surprise them with how much of a genius I really am. Plus, I think a name with “Blonde” in it is super catchy. Here was some of my inspiration:

BrooklynBlonde

TheBalancedBlonde

Blawnde

Now the trick was to stand out. So the questions was, ‘How do I sell myself to those who don’t know me? How do I come up with something SO unique and creative people will want to hear from me?! Well, you do some research…

Before I had any idea what route I wanted to take regarding my blog, I was googling the crap out of “how to have a successful blog”, because I had gone almost 5 years without one.

Amidst my Googling I came across NotAModel.tv and her story of how an interest in style turned to 72,000 blog subscribers in less than 3 months really caught my attention. Yeah. WOW. Sign me up!

I found her name fascinating and unique: Not A Model. I noticed there were a ton of blogs that had “blonde” in the name so I took it a step further and decided to poke fun at myself a lil’ bit and call my blog: Not Another Blonde. ::sighs and rolls eyes:: (You have to sound annoyed when you say it followed by some eye rolling.) Works perrrrrrrfectly.

So there ya have it, the secret to a creating the perfect blog name is lack of sleep, OCD, and fun. I’m really excited for this new chapter, hope you are too.

Have you ever changed blog names or changed the direction of your brand?

xx

Hi! I love your post about changing your blog name. I’m the same exact way! I might seem impulsive in my decisions but I go with my gut & I REALLY want to change my blog name. I named it Coffee with Katie because it rhymed & I love coffee haha but months later I realized there are so many other blogs out there named Coffee with Katie. I need something unique…something that fits me. I’d love your help if you can! My blog is about my own life, music (i’m a singer songwriter), & I visit coffee shops to review them. HELP!

Hi Katie! That’s awesome, your blog name is totally on brand with what you do. Do you own the domain coffeewithkatie? If so, I wouldn’t change it because you’re ultimately the OG of that name if that makes sense. I would only recommend changing your name if a. you hate it or b. you’ve changed direction with your blog and it’s totally off topic. Hope this helps! xx

How cool is that?! A bestie blog. I think working with people can get murky… especially creatively and especially when the person is your BFF. I think you’re on the right track by reconsidering if it’s best to continue with her or not. Either way, you’re making progress which is great! Keep the momentum goin’ babe! xx

Don’t think too much about it! Don’t let that give you analysis paralysis… when all else fails, use your name. That never goes out of style! xx
