Why I Stopped Listening to Everyone Else

motivational quoteTo some people it may seem like a no brainer to “follow your gut” and block out any naysayers. For me, it wasn’t so easy. I grew up an only child and with that comes an interesting, almost hypocritical, dynamic of independence and codependence. You’re independent because most of the time you’re alone so you have to entertain yourself with all kinds of weird things like using your bedpost as a pretend microphone and cutting up all your clothes to look like Britney Spears. Did this really happen? Maaaaaybe.

On the other hand you’re codependent because you have no siblings to experiment with so you’re left to rely solely on adults. This can get quite confusing for a little fish in a big pond especially when you’re faced with questions like, ‘What college do you want to go to? What do you want to do with your life? Why are you still single?’. So then you answer the questions the best way you know how: by asking other people what they think you should be doing. Big mistake.

why I stopped listening to everyone else

When you base your entire life around listening to everyone else, you lose yourself. You establish no confidence, direction, or clarity in any area of your life. You’re totally confused and end up second guessing and/or regretting any decision you ever made.

So what’s the solution? At the end of the day only you have to live with yourself and the choices you make, not anyone else. You are in control of your actions, so when you act according to how everyone else acts, you’re giving away your power. This was a huge factor in why I stopped listening to everyone else.

Who cares if you don’t know exactly what to do all the time? You learn along the way, that’s the fun part. You’re going to make mistakes, we all do, but wouldn’t you rather make your own mistakes instead of someone else’s? Me too, which is why I stopped listening to everyone else. I know what’s best for me and even if I don’t, it’s a lesson I learned my way, not anyone else’s.

Have you ever felt like this? Tell me in the comments below I’d love to hear about it.

xx
