Spiritual Rituals: Tarot Cards

tarot cardsFor the first time ever I had my tarot cards read for the entire year. That’s right, 1 hour and 15 minutes later and my future was all laid out for me. And I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

I think much of that was due in part to the fact I went into the reading with a very positive outlook. Despite how uneventful 2017 was, I feel very strongly about 2018. I can’t explain it but I just have a feeling it’s going to be a great year…

So anyway, I have always been fascinated with this stuff ever since I was little. I always believed in a power greater than myself. And because of that I’ve brought about really great things and also some not really great things. What you think about you bring about, good or bad, the mind doesn’t discriminate. I truly believe you attract everything in your life. Of course things like death are inevitable and uncontrollable but other than that, I think you create your life.

The reason I say all this is because your mindset extremely effects your tarot card reading. So if you are someone who thinks woah is me, poor me, why me, then your reading probably won’t be the most positive because you’re going into it with low expectations to begin with. On the other hand, when you go into it open minded and objectively (not thinking too much about it), you’re more likely to get a good reading. But aside from all that tarot cards are never set in stone, it’s not a complete blueprint of your future, it’s just an outline and whether you choose to acknowledge it or pay more attention to certain things is on you.

I had met Ally in an engagement pod and she was immediately so supportive not only of me but of all the other girls, too. She would comment only authentic, original comments (you know that’s my fave) every time. And unlike the rest of us she didn’t have a blog or side hustle, so she wasn’t trying to self-promote at all. It was refreshing to say the least.

I’m not even sure how it came about but one thing led to another and before you know it I had a tarot card reading right in my DMs. How cool?!

So with all my #positivevibes around 2018 I wanted to do all the things you’re “supposed to do” for the new year so I asked Ally to do a tarot card reading – you know, to reaffirm all my thoughts about 2018 to begin with. And I was so fascinated by the whole process I wanted to write a blog post about it so here we are.

But first things first…

What are tarot cards?

It’s believed that tarot cards were first used in France in the 14th century as regular playing cards until the 17th century when “tarotology” was established which is described as the “hypothetical reading” of tarot cards. There is no exact person who invented tarot card readings but it’s said that a French clergyman named Antoine Court de Gebelin spearheaded the interpretation of tarot cards.

Since then, tarot cards have been taken on by Romani people (gypsies) to tell fortunes and believed to relate to the collective unconscious according to psychologist Carl Jung.

The belief is that a tarot card reading is guided by a “spiritual force” used to tap into an “unconscious collective” of the person being read. Cool? Weird? I’ll let you decide…

How do you use tarot cards?

Tarot cards can be used anywhere daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. There is no right or wrong time to use them, except if you’re feeling closed off and not willing to reflect Ally advises against tarot.

Some people pull daily cards and reflect back on them at the end of the day, it’s all personal preference. However, for maximum results, you want to read your cards during energetically charged times like full or new moons. You should always sage (smudge) before a reading too just to restart the energy flow from the last time the cards were used.

I personally like to get mine read during a full/new moon because energies are heightened and this time represents fresh starts. I don’t like to use tarot cards too often because I feel it would lose its luster. Moving forward I think I’ll get my cards only read a few times a year.

As if tarot cards weren’t confusing enough, if you go around having everyone read your cards all the time you could get conflicting readings which can mess with your psyche (i.e. you got a positive read from one person and a negative read from someone else, who’s right?).

But don’t get it twisted my girl Ally doesn’t do tarot to tell other people what their future is or what they should or shouldn’t do. She says she does it as part of the personal growth process – working on making ourselves better people and having gratitude for the good things that come our way (i.e. you get a prosperous card and then find $20 on the street). I have to admit I felt this way during my reading, apparently, I was getting some pretty powerful cards and I thought ‘I knew it! I knew this was going to be a good year!’  so instantly I was overcome by gratitude, even though nothing had actually happened yet.

Ally also says if you want to start reading tarot cards you should pick a deck you’re drawn to, as the relationship between the cards can be very personal. But if that’s too “woo-woo” for you, you can get your deck from Amazon (that’s what I did but my deck is pretty basic).

What do your tarot cards represent?

Ally says tarot cards are a “tool to guide you” and a reminder to be present. A tarot card can give you an outline of how things will supposedly turn out, but it’s ultimately how you interpret it for yourself. Ally tries not to give too much input even if she has her own instincts about the reading because she wants you to discover it on your own (smart girl!).

She says you may pull different cards and they initially might be alarming or extra exciting but these cards might just represent a small moment in your life that you need to be grateful for or re-evaluate. On the flip side, tarot cards can also represent major things in your life, and Ally believes that no matter what you believe (even if you think tarot is silly) – subconsciously you can’t help but relate your reading to what’s going on in your life.

If you do tarot card readings regularly you’re bound to get a not-so-great card at least once, (I got one this time), but it just means you need to have confidence in yourself so you can get through whatever it is you need to get through. Again, tarot cards are not set in stone, and they only have as much significance as you choose to give them.

I bought a Set of oracle tarot cards a few years ago but I don’t use them all that often. I just read for myself. Tonight when picking cards my hands started tingling over 3 cards which is how I found you but I’m just wondering if this has happened to someone else. I finished my reading and closed my eyes while holding the cards and took a deep breath. It was then that there was a blinding white flash and my whole body started tingling it still is
