How to Choose the Right Job

how to choose the right jobOne of the great things about living in America is the ability to choose. We can choose who to talk to, what job to have, and where to live. But out of all of those choosing the right job is probably the most important. Your job 100% shapes the well being of your life.

If you’re stuck in a crappy job you’re going to feel crappy and when you feel crappy the people around you are going to be crappy and so on and so forth. On the flip side, you find a good job with good people, you’ll feel good which will then open the door for more good to come into your life. Needless to say, choosing the right job is HUGE. Your life literally depends on it.

But before you have a panic attack just know this:

There is no “wrong” choice.

Every decision you make, job or otherwise, leads you to where you’re supposed to be. Sometimes that means taking a detour, or two, or ten!

Regardless, you will still get to where you’re going. And even though you might look back and think ‘woulda coulda shoulda’ there’s nothing you can do about now except learn from your seemingly “bad” choices for next time.

However, if you really want to choose the right job on the first try, good luck, it probably won’t happen, BUT you can still ask yourself these questions to start:

Is there room for growth?

This was my #1 priority when it came to finding the right job. I wanted to be in a place where I could grow otherwise, what’s the point? That’s why it’s smart to look into young companies, smaller companies, or startups. Those are typically the best jobs for growth.

If you’re serious about your career but you don’t want to make the leap to entrepreneurship, you need to get serious about internal company growth.

What is the company culture like?

Company culture is so buzz-worthy nowadays. Everyone wants to talk about and work at a place with “outstanding” company culture. But what does that even mean?

It basically means you jive with the people you work for, which is huge. Trust me, I’ve been at places with super cool company culture and places with terrible company culture. It matters!

Before you make any decisions about your job, look at how the company treats their employees because it’s a direct reflection of how the company is as a whole. The last thing you want to do is to be working in a negative, petty environment.

Will you thrive?

This question is kind of a combination of the two above. When choosing the right job you should consider if you’re able to fully express yourself professionally and also personally.

You don’t want to be stuck somewhere where you have to watch what you say and you’re stuck doing the same thing over and over and over again. Every day should be an adventure. I don’t care what field you’re working in, you can make it fun, so long as your boss allows you to. Being passionate and thriving in your work environment is one of the keys to success.

But what if you still make the wrong job choice?

Like I said before, there is no wrong choice. The beauty about the power to choose is that at any moment you can choose again. If you got accepted for a job you’re not crazy about, don’t take it. You can wait for another opportunity or take the one in front of you for the time being while you search for something else. It’s that easy. Nowadays job hopping is much more accepted and actually welcomed because it shows you have a variety of experiences.

How did you know your job was the one for you? Tell me in the comments!

hmmmmm. A lot of points you mare so true. But your final not was the truest. Sometimes, due to financial responsibilities, you have to accept the offer you have until you get another one.

Totally – I actually said that in the last paragraph. Sometimes you do have to take a job for the time being while you wait for the right fit. 🙂
