Coastal California Living Room on a Budget

Welcome to our coastal California living room on a budget! I’ve always loved mixing high and low but sometimes you have to make sacrifices, and your budget calls for all low and no high. We’ve had a lot of these decor pieces since our NYC days when we were definitely ballin’ on a budget and as we start to plan for our forever home, we’ve been investing in higher end pieces that will stand the test of time.

Whether you’re an all high, all low, or somewhere in the middle kinda gal or guy, I think we can all appreciate a great deal when we find one, and I’m proud to say our living room is filled with them. Check out the full breakdown below.

furniture

Couch: Ikea. When we got this couch, we were broke living in a 550 sqft, 3rd floor, walk-up apartment in NYC. To our surprise the couch fit perfectly in the space and was comfy so we had no complaints.

Fast forward to our slightly larger apartment in California and it still fits, matches our aesthetic, and meets our needs for now. Full transparency, we have been looking at Restoration Hardware and Sixpenny for more investment couches when we move but if you’re in a small space and on a budget, this Ikea couch gets the job done and then some! It’s lasted 6 years and counting.

Chairs: Joss & Main. You can find great budget/dupe pieces on Joss & Main. I originally wanted the ‘Ester’ chairs from Target (also budget friendly) but they sold out every time.

Looking back I’m glad I got the Joss & Main ones instead because they ended up being cheaper and the color was more of what I was looking for.

Banana plant stool: Ikea. To be honest I’m not really sure what these stools are meant for but I stack them and use them like a table between my 2 accent chairs. I guess if you run out of chairs they could serve as extra seating too. Either way they add to the California coastal vibe I’m going for and most importantly they’re under $30.

Media console: Ikea. This console is a great dupe for the cb2 Chill White Media Console for a quarter of the price.

Coffee table: Target. I love this table! It’s timeless and pretty much goes with any interior style. I can dress it up or dress it down. The one issue though was I had to order the table 3 times before I got one that wasn’t broken and the marble yellowed a bit in less than a year.

I actually prefer faux marble for this reason. Marble is super high maintenance with low durability so I will not be getting that in my kitchen, but if treated right it can last a long time. A table like this at cb2 would have cost $550 but mine ended up costing me around $200.

Planters: Ikea and World Market. Ikea is also a great place to find cheap planters and dupes for West Elm, Pottery Barn, and cb2. World Market has more eclectic and artisan pieces which can make your space super unique.

wall art

Gallery wall: Desenio. They have so many different options and art styles to choose from. I love neutrals so I went with the Abstract Figures No1, Texture Line Hands, Texture Line Faces, Texture Shapes No1, Texture Shapes No3, Texture Line Faces art. I also wrote a post about how to make a gallery wall HERE.

accessories

Lamp: Target. This lamp adds the perfect height to the corner of the room. Plus, because of its timeless shape, it goes with any interior style.

Rug: Loloi rugs. This rug is hands down the best rug we own. It’s thick, handmade, and high quality. I actually just got another Loloi rug for our bedroom so stay tuned for that reveal!
