Social Media 101: How to Use Periscope to Build Your Brand

how to use periscope

Periscope is still an emerging, {10 million users and counting}, social media platform whose marketing code has yet to be cracked. BUT we are seeing a lot of experimentation and steady positive results, which I’ll be explaining in this post…

Periscope is as real as it gets. It is live, in your face, comin’ in hot broadcasting that gives you an opportunity to connect with your fans, readers, business partners, etc. The key is using this to your advantage so you’re staying authentic, on brand, and consistent.

Have an interesting but honest title

Before you broadcast yourself, you have to “name” your broadcast. Please choose wisely. Don’t name your broadcast “Kim Kardashian in the house!” if that’s not what you’re really experiencing, just to attract followers. People will get tired of your games real quick.

Instead be short, to the point, but appealing. “Fashion/Blogging Q&A: Fall Trends” is a title I’ve used. It tells people what I’m broadcasting yet adds some interest with the Q&A.

You could even do something like “How to Make Spanx”“Awakening Your Soul”, or “Useful Blogging Tips”.

Hold live Q&As

This is a GREAT opportunity to get to know your readers and for your readers to get to know you. You build credibility this way and it also shows people you’re a real person who’s engaged and not some virtual brand advertisement.

Be consistent

If you’re going to do the above, then be consistent with it. For example, I hold live Q&As every Wednesday at 8pm EST on Periscope {@notanotherblonde}.

Being consistent is easy for people to understand and remember. Marie Forleo does the same on her YouTube channel where every Tuesday is “Q&A Tuesday”. People like repetition because they know what to expect.

Name drop… a lot

No, not that kind of name drop. Drop your own name. Because Periscope is live, people are tuning in and tuning out constantly so you want to be sure you get your message or your brand across to people.

I always plug in, “You can follow me on Instagram for updates @notanotherblonde“, or something along those lines. I’ve gotten a decent amount of followers this way AND freelancing gigs. {Stay tuned!}

Promote your Periscope activity before

DON’T make the mistake of just hopping on Periscope expecting everyone to jump in at once. It doesn’t work like that unless you promote the fact you’re going to be on Periscope BEFORE you go live. I usually do it twice the day of the event: once in the morning, once a few hours before the event.

Do you have a Periscope? Comment me your username and I’ll follow you!
