Living Room Refresh on a Budget

Well… we decided to redecorate our entire house, starting with the living room ::insert nervous smiling emoji here::. I feel like if you’re going to revamp everything, you should start with the heart of the house, which in our case is the living room.

We had wanted to get a bigger, more neutral couch for a while so we used that as our focal point for everything else. I’d consider the couch the heart of the heart of the house. It’s usually the biggest piece of furniture in the room so you want it to make a statement. And it made a statement…

So much so that our gorgeous gallery wall that I so meticulously put together just last year (you can check out that post HERE), no longer worked. Luckily I was able to quickly and affordably adjust to make the room look whole again thanks to my go-to source for wall art: Desenio.

The living room wasn’t the only space that got a facelift. I also put the finishing touch on our bedroom with a more abstract piece from Desenio above the bed. Wall art makes or breaks a space in my opinion and simply by adding or removing art, the room can feel elevated… or dated. Thankfully for us, the art from Desenio definitely elevated things.

Redecorating any room in your house can be daunting… and expensive but it doesn’t have to be! These were the exact steps we followed for our living room refresh on a budget:

  1. Assessed Our Current Living Room: Like I said, redecorating can be expensive so we didn’t want to get rid of everything, so we tried to keep as much as we could while achieving the vibe we had in mind. We ended up keeping our TV console, coffee table, and accent chairs and replaced the couch, rug, and added new wall art.
  2. Decided on a Decor Style/Color Scheme: We were going for minimal Kim Kardashian, wabi-sabi, organic vibes. This was super helpful when we went to pick out our new prints from Desenio. We knew exactly what to look for.
  3. Chose a Focal Point: We chose the couch as our focal point and right behind the couch is our gallery wall so in a way they were both kind of focal points. You can’t see one without seeing the other so we based the room around both of those things. We were very mindful of the art prints and frames we chose so they would compliment each other along with the rest of our decor.
  4. Coordinated our Frames: Like I said we wanted everything old to compliment everything new so we decided to switch things up with our gallery wall frames and alternate between the white and oak frame that Desenio offers. I love minimalism but I didn’t want the space to feel too plain or sterile.
  5. Planned a New Layout and Rearranged Our Furniture: Before we made any additional purchases, we planned the layout of our living room multiple times to see what looked best for our little living room refresh. We live in California so space is pretty limited so while we weren’t ale to rearrange our entire living room, we did rearrange some furniture. We switched the chairs to be across from each other for a more conversational and cozy feel. Our living is now in a U shape which is perfect for when we have guests over.
  6. Added Decorative Accessories: We included books, vases, vessels, candles, bowls, etc. that went with our wabi-sabi, organic vibe to tie the room together. I didn’t go crazy on accessories because I don’t like tchotchkes so all in we were probably around $50-100 on all our decor for the living room which is a STEAL.

What do you think? Did I nail the minimal Kim Kardashian, wabi-sabi, organic vibe?! Comment below!
